I am on this never-ending quest to seek out television online. I haven’t had cable television in probably three years. So when a new way comes along I must try it; enter HuluPlus. Sounded interesting enough, add in the fact that I can use it on my iPhone and I am sold. At $9.99 a month, I have moderate expectations. I figure for that I am primarily paying for versatility. And I think that is pretty much it.
I played around with it for about a week before I decided it was just not worth it. I was pleased that on just 3G I could easily stream a whole TV show and have it look pretty darn good, and with relatively uninterrupted playback I could even have it stream on a lesser connection, which is about all my Faraday Cage of an apartment will allow me. Though quality of picture varies greatly… GREATLY depending on signal and when you just have a little phone, a bad picture is virtually unwatchable. That wasn’t what I didn’t like. I didn’t like that there are still just as many ads as with free Hulu. I understand they make more shows available… of which most seem to be vintage. Don’t get me wrong though, I enjoyed my Rhoda, that show never gets old. A little dated, but not old. The quantity of actual NEW shows is so limited and what is there is nothing you could not find for free and with less commercials on any other site online, even network sites.
I suppose I just expected a little more for $9.99 a month. They are certainly no rival to Netflix instant plays at that price, and Netflix has a far greater variety of television. Sure they don’t have the brand new stuff, but at this point, Hulu doesn’t really either. Clips don’t count. Unless you are into only the most popular of television, HuluPlus has nothing to tempt you. And to merely put it on your Xbox (available in 2011), PS3 (available with the new Playstation Plus subscription) or iPhone is certainly not worth the expense, in my opinion. But I had to try it. I was curious and reading other reviews just isn’t good enough for me.
