It’s Summer In The City: Detroit Style

Summer comes every year, this is fact. Though, when Summer comes to Detroit, it is something special. Like a caveman pulled from a block of ice, the city emerges from the frozen blanket of Winter to reveal a Detroit primed for sun, fun and festivities galore. There is a whole world of excitement out there, and here are just a few of my favorites.

Catch a Ballgame

An honest to goodness “worst to first” story, the Detroit Tigers are easily the best show in town. Playing at beautiful Comerica Park in downtown Detroit, this powerhouse lineup has zero problems filling seats. This Tigers team are coming off of three straight American League Central championships, and is looking good on a fourth. Pick a good day and come on down to 2100 Woodward so you can go classic Detroit with your Vernors and a hotdog. All this while you and 35,000 rabid fans watch future hall of famers knock it out of the park.

Cool Cats on the River

Since 1980, Hart Plaza and the Detroit River get extra jazzy every Labor Day Weekend. That’s because the Detroit Jazz Festival takes over. The worlds largest free jazz festival is a perfect end to a Detroit Summer. Offering performances from the worlds top jazz performers as well as food, drink, kids activities and even fireworks; this is a must for any Detroiter, new or old.

Wow, That is a Lot of Bikes

How about a nice bike ride through the various areas of downtown Detroit? That idea can make more than a few nervous. Not the case at all, especially when you add a few hundred or more bike enthusiasts. Put it all together and you have Slow Roll Detroit. Founded back in 2010 by Jason Hall and Mike Mackool, Slow Roll is a Monday night group bike ride, exploring the awesomeness of Detroit. Bring your bike and your good attitudes, cause it’s time to ride.

Stretch it Out in the Park

Yoga Rocks in the Park is all about community, awareness and health. Offering 75 minute yoga classes for all ages and stages, it’s the place to be every Saturday and Sunday in and around Detroit. With top emerging teachers, musicians and wellness advocates, it’s perfect for the healthy Summer. Bring out the whole family and get working on touching those toes.

If it Grows, They Have it

Described as one of the most authentic urban adventures in the United States, Eastern Market does not disappoint. Any given day, you can head there and fall into some sort of fun. Home of a massive six block, open air market, the Summer’s bounty is yours. With over 100 business providing everything from restaurants to retail, there is always something special going on.
