By Dave Mustaine with Joe Layden

2010 It Books

It has been a long time since I wrote a book report/review.  It took a great book to grab my attention.  MUSTAINE is that book.

For those of us in the know, Dave Mustaine is the founding member/front man and guitarist for the thrash metal band Megadeth.  He was also a founding member of Metallica and the musical genera called Thrash Metal.

None can dispute Dave Mustaine’s influence and contributions to the music world.  Megadeth has released 13 studio albums as well as countless greatest hits CD’s, live CD’s, a box set, numerous DVD’s as well as Dave’s solo recording, MD.45.

MUSTAINE is an in-depth look at the man behind the band as well as the band itself.  Mustaine is very candid about his past including the falling out with Metallica, his drug use, alcoholism and personal conflict with band members as well as other industry insiders.  Dave pulls no punches when discussing the mistakes he made and doesn’t hold back from-taking responsibility for them.  He talks about his recovery, not only from drugs and alcohol but also from the debilitating nerve damage that threatened to end his ability to play guitar.  The biggest surprise is his candid conversation about his acceptance of Christianity and how his faith helped him through his final stay in rehab as well as the reconciliation with his wife, Pam, and their two children.  He writes that he even allows his faith to help him make the right decisions concerning Megadeth.

This is a very compelling book from cover to cover.  It is a must read for fans but there is enough here for everyone to take something away.  This book may be Dave Mustaine’s greatest contribution to the music world.
