Psychic Rites refer to their music as Neon Disco Doom, a wry tag that perfectly fits their ethos. The Portland-based trio is comprised of songwriter, guitarist and synthesizer player Mike Siemens, guitarist Dave Miller, and synthesizer player Andy Schmidt. Inspired by acts such as the Cure PIL, the Knife, and Depeche Mode, the group makes dance tunes that are both melancholic and manic. Today, they share the video for the single “Molecular Curse” from their debut album, Cult_Memo.
Mike Wilson directed the psychotronic horror music video for “Molecular Curse”. It deals with the themes of family/tradition and how these traditions can be dangerous if left unexamined. While the video shows the family members on fire while eating dinner, the message is about wanting to help the people closest to you who are unwilling to accept help because they are incapable of recognizing that they have a problem in the first place.
Cult_Memo deals with the transition from religion to spirituality and issues of mortality and salvation. It’s an album that blends the sweet and somber while delivering tender emotion with a distinct edge. The album was assembled during a three-year period of soul searching and experimentation in which the band relocated from Moscow, Idaho to Portland, Oregon. The trio is currently working on their next album and will be touring to support Cult_Memo.
